Overview
Adrian Sutil started racing go-karts at the age of 14. In 2002,
he began racing in Formula Ford 1800 in Switzerland, winning all
ten races of the season from the "pole position". He raced in the
BMW ADAC Championship in 2003, however the German failed to win a
single race, taking only 6th place in the Cup final.
The following year, Sutil joined the Formula 3 Euroeseries team,
Colin Kolles. He got into the points twice but was transferred to
ASM before the end of the season. The driver remained with ASM
racing alongside Lewis Hamilton, who incidently won the
Championship that year.
Sutil spent 2006 in Japan, winning the Japan F3 Championship
that year. Sutil managed to get his first seat in F1, as a third
driver, thanks to his previous relationship with Kolles. His racing
style earned him a second driver place in 2007 alongside Christijan
Albers at Spyker (formerly that year Midland F1). However, the
newly changed team name did little for the team's performance,
leaving Sutil towards the bottom of the championship table.
Sutil saw several fellow drivers leave the team, suggesting that
he was always the better driver. After out-racing his teammate
Albers at every GP, Albers was replaced by fellow countryman Markus
Winkelhock, who was subsequently replaced by Sakon Yamamoto.
Later in the season, the team saw other change; the Italian GP
saw the introduction of the B-spec car, which, being highly
modified, the team saw a gradual but consistent increase in
performance. The first points for Spyker finally came at the
Japanese Grand Prix, where Sutil finished in 8th place after it was
revealed that Tonio Liuzzi's Toro Rosso had received a 25 second
penalty for haven overtaken Sutil during a yellow flag.
At the end of the season major changes were planned for Spyker.
Vijay Mallya and Michael Mol bought the team and changed its name
to Force India. As his contract still exists, Sutil remained in
2008, where the team failed to score a single point, despite their
4th position in Monaco, which was penalised due to an accident with
Kimi Raikkonen.
Having his contract renewed, Sutil remained on the team in 2009.
The start of the season was poor right up until the German Grand
Prix, where Sutil qualified in 7th place. He later gave his best
performance of the season, at the Italian GP, where he had go onto
the front row in qualifying and managed a 4th place in the race.
The performances of 2009 meant that the team were happy with their
direction, as such Sutil was confirmed for the 2010 season.
The beginning of the 2010 season saw Sutil with good grid
positions in Australia and Bahrain, however he was denied his due
credit due to collisions or mechanical problems.
The season concluded with Sutil having won 47 points and 11th in
the Championship, beating his rookie teammate, Paul Di Resta. He
won 5th position in Malaysia, an important result for the team and
Sutil's career record.
Sutil lost his 2012 seat with Force India, losing out to fellow
countryman Nico Hulkenburg . At time of writing Sutil is without a
seat for the 2012 season.
