Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team is a German Formula 1 outfit, with
their 2012 drivers being Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.
They originated from BAR from 1999-2005. They originated from
the Tyrrell team and had Supertec engines for their debut year.
Their drivers were Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta but both
drivers failed to score in their debut year with them. In 2000 they
finished joint 4th in the title. The promised win that
they guaranteed still eluded them but it was an improvement none
the less. 6th in the constructors in 2001 with
Villeneuve and Olivier Panis was a step back in results, but they
did score 2 podiums. 2002 saw them slip back again to
8th with just 7 points scored. In 2003 the team drafted
in Jenson Button and he consistently outscored and qualified
Villeneuve, who left before the season ended. BAR's most successful
year was in 2004 when Jenson Button took them to 10 podiums and
Takuma Sato to 1. They then become Honda and scored a win at the
2006 Hungarian GP with Jenson Button. The team pulled out of the
sport in 2008, leaving their drivers Jenson Button and Rubens
Barrichello without a seat. The team was brought by Ross Brawn and
named Brawn Gp. They won the constructors title in their first and
only year under that name, with Button also taking the drivers
title. They had Mercedes engines and at the end of 2009 Mercedes
brought the team.
Under the Mercedes name they debuted at the Australian Grand
Prix 2010. They hired 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher,
making his comeback to the sport, and Nico Rosberg to be their
drivers. The team battled for the "best of the rest" label,
finishing the year 4th in the championship with 214 points.
Rosberg finished on the podium 3 times but Schumacher could only
record a best finish of 4th in Spain, Canada and Korea. It was the
first season in his 18 seasons of racing in F1 that he did not
record a single podium, win, fastest lap or pole position.
After the disappointments of 2010, the team vowed to improve for
2011. They retained their 2 drivers and the team increased the gap
to the cars behind, keeping their best of the rest credentials.
However they could not close or keep up with the 3 teams in front,
Red Bull, Mclaren and Ferrari. The team's first race in the W02 car
ended badly, with both cars retiring after accident damage. The
year went on at a rather down beat pace, with the car and drivers
not performing to the high standards expected before the season
begun. Nico's best results of 5th at the 3rd and 4th rounds were
due to strong starts, often fading away in the later stages.
Schumacher peaked at 4th place in the Canadian Grand Prix,
extremely close to a podium. He had some good races, like his
battle from 24th to 5th in Belgium, but also some were littered
with errors. The team finished 4th, again, in the standings with
The 2012 season see's the team stick with their current driver
line up. They changed their name from Mercedes GP to the Mercedes
AMG F1 Team.
